GPS Clock Server
Obtain a satellite-referenced time source for compatible clocks and network equipment. HC Electronics supplies GPS clock server equipment for purchases that require GPS reception and a defined timing output in one specified hardware configuration.
Choose the server together with its receiving equipment, antenna connection and required output interfaces. For a new purchase or replacement, request a proposal that identifies the complete GPS-referenced appliance and the components included.
Request GPS Clock Server SpecificationsSpecify the GPS-Referenced Appliance
A GPS receiver obtains timing information from satellite signals. The server makes that reference available through its supported outputs, such as a network time service. Satellite reception and time delivery are separate functions, and both must be included in the equipment specification.
For your enquiry, specify that GPS must provide the operating reference for the required outputs. Ask which receiver is fitted and whether its operation depends on any separately supplied receiving module.
Where NTP delivery is required, identify the equipment that will use the service. Any additional timing output should be listed individually, with its connector and signal format confirmed for the proposed server.
The quotation should distinguish the GPS-equipped version from other configurations in the same server range.
Match the Antenna Input to the Receiving Hardware
The antenna connection is an important part of a GPS server purchase. Active antennas incorporate amplification and commonly receive operating power through their coaxial connection, so the receiver input, antenna and cable must be considered together.
For the offered server, request the antenna-input specifications before selecting accessories or retaining an existing antenna.
| Antenna-Input Detail | Information to Confirm |
|---|---|
| Approved antenna | Antenna model and receiving characteristics compatible with the fitted GPS receiver. |
| Antenna supply | Whether the input provides antenna power and the applicable voltage and current limits. |
| Input connection | Connector type and any required adapter supplied with the equipment. |
| Cable allowance | Approved cable specification and permitted loss for the proposed receiving arrangement. |
| Fault indication | Whether the appliance detects an antenna disconnection, short circuit or another input fault. |
| Accessory compatibility | Approved arrangements for any required surge protector, splitter or extension component. |
Include the anticipated antenna-to-server cable route with your enquiry. For a replacement appliance, provide the existing antenna and cable identification so their suitability can be reviewed.
Receiving Conditions and Equipment Placement
The server enclosure may be located in an equipment room while the antenna occupies a separate receiving position. Satellite visibility still matters: buildings, indoor placement and reflected signals can affect GPS reception.
Antenna Position
Describe the proposed antenna position and any obstructions when requesting a server package. Have the receiving arrangement assessed before approving a cable length or assuming an indoor antenna position will be adequate.
Appliance Installation
For the appliance itself, provide the available equipment space, supply voltage and access restrictions. Request its enclosure drawing with the antenna connector, network ports, power connection and mounting provisions identified.
Outdoor Exposure
Outdoor exposure requirements should be specified for the antenna and its accessories separately from the server enclosure.
Check GPS Status and Reference Alarms
A useful product evaluation should establish how staff can recognize a valid GPS reference—not simply whether the appliance is powered.
Ask which receiver information is available on the proposed server. Relevant requirements may include satellite reception, accepted reference status, antenna faults and the time of the last successful synchronization. Confirm which indications are actually provided and how operators access them.
For an unattended installation, specify how a reference problem must be reported. Request details of any available alarm output or remote notification, including whether it identifies the cause or reports only a general fault.
Also establish how the server reports recovery. The accepted specification should distinguish a reference that has become available again from one that the appliance has accepted for its timing outputs.
Evaluate Accuracy at the Server Output
GPS signal accuracy is not a universal accuracy specification for a finished server. Actual performance depends on the receiving equipment and operating conditions, while the published GPS service commitments concern the satellite signals rather than every device that uses them.
For purchasing approval, request the timing tolerance at the output you will use. The supporting information should identify the server configuration, reference conditions, measurement point and test method.
Where several output types are required, assess each against its own specification. A result measured at a receiver timing connection should not automatically be used as the performance figure for a network service.
Reference-loss performance should be documented separately from GPS-locked operation. Specify the maximum interruption period your purchase must tolerate and the permitted error during that period. Ask what the offered server does when those limits are exceeded and how it returns to normal operation after reception is restored.
GPS Clock Server Purchasing Questions
Is an antenna fault indication the same as a GPS reference-loss indication?
No. An antenna fault concerns the receiving connection or associated hardware, while reference loss concerns the availability of acceptable timing information.
Ask which conditions the proposed server can distinguish. A general alarm should not be assumed to identify whether the cause is the antenna connection, receiving conditions or another problem.
Can we purchase the server without a new antenna?
Request an appliance-only quotation when you intend to retain existing receiving accessories. Provide the antenna model, cable specification and details of any components between the antenna and receiver.
The retained equipment should be approved for the new server’s input requirements before it is excluded from the purchase package.
Can reception and output checks be included in the equipment evaluation?
State the checks required when requesting a proposal. These may include acquisition of a valid GPS reference, operation of the specified timing output and the response to a controlled reference interruption.
Ask which checks can be demonstrated for the offered unit and which depend on the final antenna location. Record the evaluated hardware and receiving accessories with the acceptance documentation.
Request a GPS Clock Server Quotation
Send HC Electronics your required server quantity, timing-output requirements and proposed antenna arrangement. Include the available power, equipment-space constraints and any receiving accessories you plan to retain.
Request a quotation identifying the GPS receiver configuration, supported outputs, antenna package, available status indications and applicable performance information.
