Master Clocks

Control the timing reference for compatible receiving clocks from a central unit. HC Electronics master clocks provide the central timing role in installations where multiple clocks need to follow a common reference.

Select your master clock around the outputs it must provide, the reference it will use and the operating controls your team needs. For a controller replacement, identify the receiving clocks that must remain in service before choosing the new hardware.

HC Electronics master clock controller for synchronized clock systems

Select the Master Clock by Its Outputs

The starting point for a master clock purchase is the equipment it will control. Specify the receiving-clock models, their required timing signals and the number of output circuits needed.

Master clock hardware can differ in both output format and the number of available channels. A controller with several connectors should not be assumed to provide several independently configurable clock circuits. Review the functions assigned to each output on the proposed model.

For each required circuit, establish the supported signal format, electrical rating and permitted connected load. Where separate groups need independent correction or control, state that requirement explicitly so it can be checked against the controller’s capabilities.

Request the configuration actually being offered—not simply a list of every interface available across a product range. The quotation should identify which outputs are fitted, enabled and included in the price.

Reference Inputs and Time Controls

01 / Reference

Specify how the master clock must obtain its reference time. The incoming reference and the outgoing clock signal are separate selection points; a controller may receive one form of timing information and distribute another through its supported outputs.

02 / Time Setting

For your enquiry, identify the existing reference equipment or the required input format. Include any requirement for manual time setting, local-time adjustment or automatic seasonal changes, and ask how the proposed model handles these functions.

03 / Operation

The operating method also matters. State whether staff need to make changes at the controller or through an approved configuration connection. Request details of the available controls, access restrictions and settings-retention behaviour for the quoted hardware.

Master Clock Configuration Details

Use the product proposal to establish the controller’s functions and supplied components. The following items should be documented for the selected configuration.

Controller DetailInformation to Establish
Reference inputAccepted timing source, required input interface and any external receiving equipment.
Clock outputsFitted output types, active channel count and supported receiving-clock formats.
Circuit controlWhether outputs can be configured, corrected or enabled independently.
Output ratingsElectrical limits and applicable loading conditions for each clock circuit.
Operator accessAvailable controls, configuration connection and any required software or accessories.
Status informationIndications available for reference reception, output activity and controller faults.
Supply and enclosureController power requirements, mounting dimensions and terminal-access arrangement.

Ask for an input/output schedule that identifies every connection by function. This is particularly useful where a purchase specification calls for several interfaces but only some are required on the delivered unit.

Check What the Controller Can Report

For equipment that will be maintained by facility staff, identify which operating conditions need to be visible without additional test equipment.

Request a description of the proposed controller’s indicators or status screen. Establish whether it shows reference reception, active output settings, a detected circuit fault or only the controller’s current time.

Displaying the correct time at the master unit is not, by itself, confirmation that every receiving clock has synchronized. Where individual-clock feedback is required, ask whether that feedback is supported and what compatible receiving equipment it depends on.

For acceptance testing, agree which controller functions will be demonstrated. Keep reference acquisition, output operation and any reported fault conditions as separate checks rather than treating an illuminated display as the complete test.

Master Controller Replacement

Replacing the master unit while retaining the receiving clocks requires an output-by-output review. Submit the existing controller’s model, its connection schedule and the settings used for each active circuit.

Identify functions that must be preserved, including any separate clock-group settings or correction controls. The proposed replacement should distinguish directly supported functions from requirements that would need additional interface equipment.

For the physical replacement, provide the available equipment-space dimensions and the direction from which existing cables enter. Request the new controller’s outline drawing and terminal layout before approving the mounting arrangement.

A controller-only quotation should also identify any required reference receiver, interface accessory or external power component that is not included.

Master Clock Purchasing Questions

Can one master clock operate both analog and digital receiving clocks?

It may be possible, but the display style alone does not determine compatibility. Master clock products can support different receiving-clock types through appropriate outputs. The proposed controller must provide the timing format and electrical connection required by each clock group. Request confirmation of the supported combination.

Does the master clock supply operating power to the connected clocks?

Not necessarily. A controller may provide a timing signal, a powered clock circuit or different arrangements on different outputs. Identify the output type and its electrical rating before relying on the master unit to power receiving clocks. Any separately powered clocks should be identified in the equipment specification.

Can additional output channels be added after purchase?

Ask whether the proposed model supports later expansion or must be ordered with its final output configuration. Where expansion is available, request the compatible module details, remaining capacity and any restrictions on which outputs can operate together. Do not treat unused enclosure space or an unassigned connector as proof of an available clock channel.

Request a Master Clock Quotation

Contact HC Electronics with the required master-clock quantity, reference-input requirement and receiving-clock details. Include the number and type of clock outputs needed, together with any essential operating or status functions.

For a replacement purchase, attach the existing controller specification and identify which equipment must remain unchanged. Request a proposal that clearly lists the controller configuration, supported connections and included accessories.
